Important notice for Autodesk® Maya® 2012 software, and prior Maya version, users regarding the latest Apple® Mac OS® X operating system release, version 10.7 “Lion”.
Testing Maya 2012, and prior versions of Maya, on the Mac OS X 10.7 operating system, has identified platform compatibility issues.
The issues:
If you upgrade to Mac OS X 10.7, you may encounter these issues. Autodesk recommends that users of Maya 2012, and prior releases of Maya, do not upgrade to the Mac OS X 10.7 until the compatibility issues have been addressed by Autodesk and Apple. Teams from both companies are working closely to resolve these issues and a notification will be issued once the issues have been addressed.
Note: As of this time, Autodesk® Maya® 2012 software has not been qualified to run on Mac OS X 10.7. Please consult the qualification charts for more information.
I found upgradeding to Mental Ray 3.8.1 and 2011 HF 3 then saving my project immediately upon opening has allowed Maya 2011 to run fine on Lion.
Prior to these steps it failed as described. As soon as I upgraded Mental Ray, and HF3 as well as save on open it has worked fine for 2 days.
Sorry, no update on this yet.

To work around this, I created a partition on one of my harddrives and installed my old OS 10.6 on that partition. Then I installed Maya 2012 on that harddrive, too. It works great. When the compatibility problem is solved, I'll remove the partition.

I have been chatting with the QA/Development teams and the Product Manager. We are at the mercy of Apple because the video drivers which affect Maya are built into the operating system which is a bit different in Windows.
We will have a unified message in Mayastation and Up and Ready when an udpate is available.
David,
I was just wondering if there are any more details on the patch / update to make Maya work with Lion??
Looking forward to your response..
Many Thanks

Hi,
I am a student, and I don't have any older version of OSX other than Lion due to the fact that my school just gave me a computer with this installation. Are there any older versions of Maya that are compatible with Lion so far? I attempted to install the 2010 version when I could not get the 2012 installer to complete, and it bombed out as well. I need Maya for a class next week. Any suggestions?
From what I understand, most of the programs Autodesk currently has available are not ready for Lion. I don't mind waiting, because I know Autodesk has never let me down. However I am curious as to when this issue will be updated so I know when I can try this download again.
Hi:
We currently do not have the information available as to when. However, you may always refer to our website www.autodesk.com for updates.
Thank you and have a nice day!

When this problem is fixed, will maya have to be re-downloaded? I have rather expensive internet so downloading maya has cost quite a lot...
And can anyone provied an approximate date for when the patch/upgrate will be ready? I understand there's really no choice right now but to wait, but if it's going to take more than a few months then I'm a little bit screwed...
Can you say more about how to upgrade Mental Ray and HF3?
I'm a bit of a newbie to Maya and am finding it beach balls on me quite a bit. Yes, I have OS 10.7.3. And some aspects of my install appeared to "Fail on Exit" although the green check boxes did appear in the install dialogue box.
Hmmm. And how come it's been a year since all of these posts and the Maya folks have not seen fit to fix the compatibility issue with Lion? Do I detect a bit of them not caring about us Mac users?
Thanks, all, for any help you can give. Help me stop seeing the beach ball so often.
🙂
